This was a year of challenges and difficulties we all at BVO embraced and learned from. It’s made us better and given us strength to take on the challenges 2012 undoubtedly will bring.

Over 1500 skin care companies signed the Compact for Safe Cosmetics Act and only 321 met and surpassed the requirements, and with them us! We’ve surpassed many of our competitors setting up very high standards in the cosmetics industry and proving it is possible to make safe skin care products using only what nature has to offer.

“These companies are leading the cosmetics industry toward safety, showing it’s possible to make products with full transparency and without using hazardous chemicals,” said Janet Nudelman, program director of the Breast Cancer Fund, a founding member of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics.

The new report released today, “Market Shift: The story of the Compact for Safe Cosmetics and the growth in demand for safe cosmetics,” describes the seven-year project during which the nonprofit organizations that make up the Campaign worked with companies in a unique partnership to raise the bar for safer personal care products.

We will keep pushing innovation and proving it is possible to create safe products for the entire family and mother earth.

Congratulations, Campaign for Safe Cosmetics & fellow Champion companies! We broke the mold when we agreed to make safe cosmetics & disclose all of our ingredients, unlike the vast majority of cosmetics companies.

When we talk about exfoliation, we generally think facial exfoliation and forget that the rest of the skin in our body needs to be renewed too.

There are two types of exfoliants, chemical and mechanical. Chemical exfoliation is achieved by applying extremely strong acids to the skin. These acids literally burn the outer layers of the skin leaving the unprotected layers underneath totally exposed, the reason why after a chemical exfoliation also known as chemical peeling, your skin burns and feels irritated. If not applied by a professional, chemical peeling can cause severe scaring, not mentioning these acids are not always good for your health.  Mechanical exfoliation is achieved by scrubbing the skin with a salt, sugar, seeds, sand or perfectly designed body scrubs. Although more time consuming, this last one you can do at home, saving you money. Today body scrubs come in a variety of scents. Some stronger than others, and quite a few containing way too many harmful chemicals, so choose wisely and most importantly read the ingredients. Their purpose is to help remove dead skin cells and deeply clean pores. Choosing the right one for your skin type is the key to success.

Generally there are 2 types of mechanical body scrubs:

Salt base: Salt base body scrubs are the preferred ones worldwide.
