"It took 2 years in the making. I wanted something different, something unique, so coming up with the fragrance was the first obstacle we had. I wanted all the fragrances that I loved in one bottle, but that didn't turn out to be too attractive! ha! so once we had that narrowed down and we had the fragrance I fell in love with, the next challenge was the bottle and the packaging, that was a tough one. I think one of the most difficult things an eco-conscious business has to confront packaging. Everything we do and I literally mean everything we do, creates an impact on our world, so minimizing that impact while offering a nice looking product was truly difficult to achieve.
The first bottle designs were a complete disaster. As an artist I knew I wanted something I could make for added value to the product itself. The idea of getting the bottles from China was completely out of the equation, and since the first thing I did was to pick the name for the perfume we built the idea for the design based on that concept. We worked with many materials, recycled papers (that didn't work out at all), metals and stones and the one that really worked was concrete. Making it work on the design of the bottle was also a challenge! In the beginning I wanted a bottle that was completely covered with concrete. The bottle would have looked like a brick, when opened it would release a wonderful exotic aroma, but that wasn't too doable and the tests were unsuccessful. So we decided as a last resort to go with a clean glass bottle and only the cap covered in concrete. A challenge as well but it worked and we had the design. Now what to do with the cap once the perfume is gone was another obstacle. The glass bottle and plastic parts are recyclable, and I hope you do recycle please, our world sure needs to be cleaned asap! but concrete is not a common household recyclable material, especially in the US, so we all got our thinking caps and one member of the team came up with the idea of using it as a candle holder, it works and it looks great as a decorative element.
So here I was cheering because we finally got it down and someone asks "what about the box?" of course! the box! we can't deliver a product without a box!... The idea of the box wasn't as challenging as the design concept of the bottle, actually we came up with the idea in less than an hour. The box that encases the beautiful urban looking perfume had to look rustic as well, so the idea of a wine looking box came up.
Really expensive wines are delivered in wood boxes. The bottle inside rests in a bed of hay or wood shred to protect the bottle and maintain a constant temperature. Since we couldn't find a wood box small enough for my perfume we instead found the perfect cardboard box made with 100% recycled paper. The inside bed where the bottle rests, is 100% Aspen wood shred.
It took 2 years in the making, but it was so well worth it. I hope you enjoy every drop of it as much as we enjoyed designing it.
