Bakuchiol is a highly purified active ingredient extracted from the seeds of the babchi plant (Psoralea corylifolia). P. corylifolia contains various phytochemicals, including flavonoids (neobavaisoflavone, isobavachalcone, bavachalcone, bavachinin, bavachin, corylin, corylifol, corylifolin and 6-prenylnaringenin), coumarins (psoralidin, psoralen, isopsoralen and angelicin), and meroterpenes (bakuchiol, and 3-hydroxybakuchiol).
There are three very distinct ingredients derived from the plant (Psoralea corylifolia):
- Sytenol® A Bakuchiol, the pure meroterpene famous for its retinol like properties - a yellow to brown oil like substance -, INCI name Bakuchiol, obtained from the seeds of the plant, through a proprietary monomolecular extraction process developed by Sytheon.
- Bakuchi Fruit Extract, a less potent highly diluted solvent extracted water based ingredient, with the INCI name Bakuchi fruit (Psoralea Corylifolia Leguminosae) extract.
- Babchi Seed Oil, with the INCI name Psoralea corylifolia Seed Oil, a cold pressed carrier oil.
Sytenol® A Bakuchiol, the ingredient we at By Valenti Organics have sourced directly from the manufacturer Sytheon, is the only true Bakuchiol of all three, and the one with the powerful retinol like properties it's so famous for.
The Bakuchi Fruit Extract, is instead obtained from dissolving the fruit of the Psoralea corylifolia plant in a base of glycerin and water, resulting in a water base ingredient, instead of the hydrophobic Bakuchiol. This ingredient often falsely disclosed as Bakuchiol, contains high amounts of phototoxic compounds (Psoralenes and Isopsoralenes), and doesn't provide any of the powerful retinol like properties the true Bakuchiol is scientifically proven to poses.
The Babchi Seed Oil, extracted by cold pressing the seeds of the plant, is considered a carrier oil with none of the powerful anti-ageing properties Bakuchiol has, containing high amounts of the phototoxic compounds (Psoralenes and Isopsoralenes). (1)
