Recently, an enlightening email from the Environmental Working Group (EWG) brought to our attention a significant concern regarding our eagerly anticipated mineral makeup line. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, alongside FDA findings, revealed alarming levels of lead in over 400 lipsticks, highlighting the ubiquity of mineral pigments—a key component in mineral cosmetics—as a source of contamination. This revelation prompted a reevaluation of our suppliers and the safety data sheets provided, revealing a lack of information on heavy metal content.

In light of these findings, we've put a hold on our mineral makeup launch, as detailed in our blog, and initiated comprehensive testing of our ingredients. Despite a supplier's assurance that our pigments meet FDA safety criteria, the acceptance of even minimal lead levels raises concerns. The FDA's threshold for "safe" lead levels in cosmetics starkly contrasts with more stringent international standards, underlining a broader issue of regulatory inadequacy.

The presence of lead, a known carcinogen and neurotoxin, in cosmetics is a glaring indicator of the industry's and regulatory bodies' failure to protect consumers fully. Our investigation into the purity of pigments has confirmed the unfortunate reality that most mineral pigments supplied globally contain unacceptable levels of heavy metals.
